The application of hypnosis in the treatment of certain ailments is called hypnotherapy. Hypnosis in the hands of a reputable practitioner is harmless and does not have any side effects. It can, in fact, be productive in the sense that it is capable to treat some certain ailments that a person may have. A person must be willing to be hypnotized otherwise the therapy will not work. This however, does not mean that the person under hypnosis will not be able to control the situation around him. If at any point of time he feels uncomfortable, then he is perfectly capable of ending the session. Hypnosis is a very natural state of mind. It is the point at which the conscious and the subconscious of the mind meet. The person at this point feels extremely relaxed and in a dreamlike state, in other words, he is in a trance like state. The mind of the patient under hypnosis is at its most receptive point. He is better able to receive information and that information is better able to 'stick' to the subconscious mind.
The first stage of a hypnotherapy session involves an informal, interactive chat between the therapist and the patient. This brings into focus the particular problems that the patient wants to be addressed. The next step involves the process of hypnotizing the patient. The therapist then guides the patient into bringing out the specific problem or problems and tries to tackle it by adopting any of the number of methods of hypnotherapy. At this, the hypnotist is merely trying to bring out the hidden power of the mind to achieve the goals that the patient wants. These goals can either be to stop smoking or to lose weight or to curb some irrational fears or to cut down on stress or to gain in confidence or even to excel in a chosen sport of the person.
There is an ongoing debate on hypnotherapy. There are many who believe that it is just a trick, others doubt the very existence of this form of therapy itself. They do not believe in the form in which it works. However, one thing that must be mentioned here is that the use of therapy as a form of treatment has been in existence for as long as the ancient Egyptians and the ancient Indians, in fact for as long as civilization itself. There have been and still are many cases of hypnotherapy successfully treating certain ailments that the conventional modes of treatment have not been able to achieve. When it comes to certain problems that are related to the mind, hypnotherapy has been the answer to the successful treatment of many of them.
