A General Idea Of HypnosisHypnosis can be explained as a state of mind where it is at its most receptive level. It is a state of mind where the person feels very relaxed and in a very comfortable mood. The application of this state in the treatment of certain ailments is called hypnotherapy. It has been known to treat various kinds of ailments like obesity, stress, insomnia, amnesia and phobias to name a few. Besides these, hypnotherapy has also been known to treat functional disorders like Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The history of hypnosis being used as a form of therapy goes way back to ancient times, even as far back as the ancient Egyptians and the ancient Indians. This is a natural form of treatment that, if used by a right practitioner can be an effective method to treat some particular illnesses. The first stage involves an informal interaction between the person wishing to undergo hypnotherapy and the therapist. This is to bring into focus the specific issues that the patient wants to be tackled. The next stage involves the process of hypnotizing the patient. One must, however, remember that no person can get hypnotized if he is not willing. Hypnosis cannot be forced upon a person. Also, if at any time during the process he feels uncomfortable to continue, he is perfectly capable to end the session at any time he wishes to do so. A person under hypnosis is not fully awake or asleep. He is in a state of suspended reality and his subconscious mind is brought to the fore. At this point he is not "thinking" in the traditional sense of the term, but rather he is "experiencing" like when one is watching a movie. The hypnotherapist can make suggestions that are very likely to "stick" to the mind. This is precisely because the conscious mind of the patient is not getting in the way. However, if for some reason the person wills himself not to allow the suggestions to be accepted, they will not be. The smoker, who comes in to quit smoking but is not really committed to that goal, cannot be forced to do so. The goals can be different for different people. Some wish to undergo hypnotherapy to achieve certain goals like reducing stress or losing weight or getting rid of certain irrational fears or perhaps even to excel in his chosen sport. Different kinds of methods can be adopted in using hypnotherapy to treat a patient. It is irrefutable that hypnotherapy has been the reason for the successful treatment of some particular illnesses that even the conventional form of medical treatment had failed to achieve. There are people who believe in hypnotherapy as an alternative form of treatment to successfully achieve their particular goals. |
