A Few Facts

Even though many of us may not realize it, hypnotherapy as a method of clinical treatment has been around for ages. In fact for as long as ancient civilization itself though not in the form in which we know it as it is today. It involves the use of hypnosis in the treatment of certain illnesses and ailments that are related to the mind of the patient. Hypnosis is a totally natural state of mind where the person under hypnosis is in a state of extreme relaxation and comfort. This is done usually for relieving pain or conditions relating to one's state of mind. The most common use of hypnotherapy is to help in the relieving of maladies like obesity, smoking, phobias, insomnia, amnesia and stress to name a few. Besides these, many others can also be treated by hypnosis, including functional disorders like Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Hypnotherapy usually involves, firstly, a consultation between the therapist and the person wishing to undergo the treatment. This aims to bring to a better understanding of what specific issues the patient wishes to be treated. The next stage is when the patient undergoes hypnosis. At this point, the person is in a state of trance and is thus more receptive to suggestions. It must be understood that at the time, the patient is neither awake nor sleeping. This is the point at which the conscious and the subconscious are aligned with each other. The patient is more likely to be "experiencing" things than to be "thinking" in the traditional sense and hence does not have the consciousness to question or to judge critically or to analyze. The hypnotherapist can thus, because of the reason that the conscious mind is not in the way, make suggestions that can actually embed itself firmly in the mind of the person under hypnosis. One thing that must be remembered is that the person undergoing the treatment must be willing to be hypnotized or the therapy will not work. Also, if at any point of time the patient feels uncomfortable with the session, then he can bring it to an end anytime he wants to.

The topic of hypnotherapy however, has an ongoing debate as to whether it actually works like the way it is portrayed to do. There are some that do not believe in addressing the subconscious mind to actually cure ailments. There are others still that do not believe in the very existence of the mind in the subconscious state and hence in the very fact of hypnotherapy by itself. However the case may be, it is undeniable that the use of hypnotherapy as a form of clinical treatment has proven to be successful in many cases and continues to do so.
